\nEuropean Network of Environmental Professionals
\nFROM THE PRESIDENT
\nDear Colleagues,
\nA Bulletin full of information regarding
\nthe development of our Network is here
\nfor you. Many topics are addressed that
\nwere discussed at the last General
\nAssembly, held in Basel where our Swiss
\nmember ASEP\/SVU has been such an
\nexcellent host. And of course we look
\nahead to our next Assembly which will be
\nheld this at our Headquarters in Brussels
\nthis Autumn; a summary of the ENEP
\naction programme (often called our
\n\u2018Business Plan\u2019), information on our
\ncommunication strategy, and financial
\ninformation are among the items
\naddressed. You will also find news from
\nthe \u2018Accreditation Task Force\u2019, which
\nprovides you with an update on where we
\nstand in our thinking regarding the
\nestablishment of a European
\nenvironment professional charter.
\nDirectly following from a decision at the
\nlatest General Assembly, information is
\nincluded on a \u2018membership expertise
\nmatrix\u2019 which will make it easier to find
\nout which types of specialist expertise and
\ninterest areas are to be found among
\nwhich associations.
\nHaving fled the rainy and windy parts of
\nEurope, from my temporary Italian refuge
\nI cordially wish you a Summer holiday as
\nhappy as the one I am currently
\ncelebrating. Looking forward to meeting

\nBRUSSELS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
\nPreparations are underway for the
\nAutumn General Assembly, which will
\ntake place on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th
\nSeptember 2012 in Brussels, Belgium.
\nPlease note that this General Assembly
\nwill not take place in Helsinki, Finland as
\npreviously reported.
\nThere will important issues discussed at
\nthis General Assembly so it is vitally
\nimportant that all member associations
\nare represented.
\nSome of these important issues include:
\n\u00b7 Business Plan
\n\u00b7 Communications Strategy
\n\u00b7 European Environmental
\nProfessional Accreditation
\n\u00b7 Membership Expertise Matrix
\n\u00b7 LIFE+ Funding Application
\n\u00b7 Alternative Financial Instruments
\n\u00b7 Budget Approval
\nWe are also in the process of organising
\nthe side events for the Thursday,
\ninformation for which will be circulated
\nwith the agenda and papers for the
\nGeneral Assembly.
\nCONFERENCE ON BIODIVERSITY STRATEGIES ACROSS EUROPE
\nA Conference on Biodiversity Strategies in
\nEurope was organised by ENEP\u00b4s
\nBiodiversity Working Group as a side
\nevent for this year\u2019s Spring General
\n1
\nThe ENEP Bulletin Issue 24 \u2013 August 2012
\nAssembly, hosted by our Swiss partners,
\nthe Association of Swiss Environmental
\nProfessionals (ASEP), in partnership with
\nthe Association Fran\u00e7aise des Ing\u00e9nieurs
\nEcologues (AFIE). The Conference
\nincluded examples of National
\nBiodiversity Strategies from Switzerland
\nand France, as well as the European
\nBiodiversity Strategy. We celebrated the
\nlaunch of the Swiss Biodiversity Strategy,
\nand also learned about the new ones
\nadopted in France and Europe for the
\nhorizon 2020. Some 20 ENEP members
\nbenefited from this event as well as ENEP
\n\u00b4s Association members in a convivial
\natmosphere. Many thanks to those who
\nparticipated in this biodiversity event!
\nThe European Biodiversity Strategy 2020
\nwas launched in 2011 with the aim of
\nstopping biodiversity loss and ecosystem
\nservices degradation. This new document
\nis based on a new multisectorial approach
\nwith 6 objectives that imply the
\ninvolvement of key sectorial policies.
\nThe 6 objectives of the European
\nBiodiversity Strategy are:
\n\u00b7 Fully implement the Birds and
\nHabitats Directives
\n\u00b7 Maintain and restore ecosystems
\nand their services
\n\u00b7 Increase the contribution of
\nagriculture and forestry to
\nbiodiversity
\n\u00b7 Ensure the sustainable use of
\nfisheries resources
\n\u00b7 Combat Invasive Alien Species
\n\u00b7 Step-up action to tackle the global
\nbiodiversity crisis

\nProject GRU: BEST PRACTICES in WASTE management
\nThe ENEP member AIAT was awarded, as
\nproject leader, funds after a national
\ncompetition promoted by the Italian
\nMinistry of Environment and related to
\nthe presentation of environmental
\neducation and sustainability proposals.
\nThe winning project is titled \u201cGRU- An
\nintegrated policy for the management and
\nthe reduction of waste in University
\nenvironment\u201d and will be developed in a
\n12 month time-frame. The kick off of the
\nproject occurred on the 1st of March.
\nGRU project deals with environmental
\neducation and information on waste
\nproduction in the Politecnico di Milano,
\nUniversitya\u2019 di Napoli Federico II, and
\nUniversita\u2019 di Catania and has an
\nimportant partners consortium devoted
\nto collaborate to the achievement of GRU
\nproject goals. ENEP is part of the
\nconsortium and is required to provide
\nsome examples of best practices in the
\nfollowing topics:

\n– \u201cPrevention\u201d of waste according
\nto the European directive
\n2008\/98\/CE;
\n– Reduction of packaging;
\n– Waste sorting management;
\n– Green Public Procurement in
\nUniversity;
\n– Preparation for re-use and
\nrecycling.
\nThe target audience is graduate and
\nundergraduate students from those
\nuniversities. They are, in fact, assumed to
\nbe very sensitive to new environmental
\nviews, issues, and practices and will be
\ndirectly involved in the activities to learn
\nand imbibe an environmental and
\nsustainability culture. By this perspective,
\nthe dissemination of best practices
\nadopted within the European Community
\nand related to waste management is
\nstrongly welcome. For this reason, the
\nGRU project team kindly asked ENEP
\nmembers for their contribution to enrich
\nEU \u201cbest practices\u201d on the topic.
